About Mammoth Ivory: Unlike elephant ivory, mammoth ivory is legal to collect, sell, import/export, etc. However, it is rare and difficult to collect because of the remote and harsh nature of the areas where it is found.  Mammoths, or mastodons, went extinct about 10,000 years ago, but their bones and tusks are commonly found in northern tundra, especially in Siberia.  This ivory is from Siberia and is between 10,000 and 30,000 years old.  It is not fossilized, but the actual ivory which was preserved in permafrost.  Indeed, at least one complete mammoth, with hair, skin and meat intact, has been excavated in Siberia (see “Raising the Mammoth” on the Discovery Channel).
